I am Charles Thorne, MD a Plastic Surgeon with an interest and 20 years of experience in the surgical correction of Congenital Nevi.
The word “Congenital” means “born with” and the word “nevi” is the plural of “nevus” meaning “mole.” So, congenital nevi are just moles that you’re born with. Our approach to congenital nevi depends on the size, location, and other factors such as how hairy they are.
For the most part, surgical intervention is performed because the patient or parents view the nevus (or nevi) as unsightly and prefer a scar than a dark, hairy mole. There is one other issue which I will explore on the following pages in this website and that is the development of malignant tumors within congenital nevi. Fortunately, this is very rare and is related to the size of the nevus, but cannot be ignored in the large nevi. I encourage you to explore this site, view the patients’ photographs and email or call the office at 212-794-0044 with any questions.
